Friday 22 May brings that energy in full force as Auckland marks World Goth Day, the annual global celebration of the subculture built on atmosphere, expression, and a devotion to the dark.

World Goth Day began in the UK in 2009 after a BBC Radio 6 broadcast spotlighted goth culture. The idea resonated with DJs, artists, and communities who recognised the value of a day dedicated to the music, fashion, and creativity that shape the scene. The date now anchors events across the world, each one defined by the people who keep goth culture alive.
