Grunge was born in the damp basements and dive bars of Seattle in the late 80s, when bands like Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam took the raw energy of punk and the heaviness of metal, then stripped it down to something darker, louder, and more honest. The flannel shirts, ripped jeans, and battered guitars weren’t fashion statements, they were survival gear for a generation that wanted music to mean something again. By the early 90s, grunge had exploded worldwide, dragging the underground into the mainstream and rewriting the sound of rock forever.
Here in New Zealand, the wave hit just as hard. Local scenes soaked up the Seattle sound, with bands jamming in garages, dive bars, and student flats, channeling the same angst and authenticity. Kiwi crowds embraced grunge as the soundtrack to rebellion, heartbreak, and late-night chaos, a perfect fit for our own DIY spirit. On Friday…
